| Cascata delle Marmore |
The
Cascata delle Marmore (7 kilometres from Terni along the SS. 209
Valnerina) is in an exceptionally beautiful natural setting. The waterfalls are in fact artificial, created by the Romans.
In 290 BC the consul Curius Dentatus gave orders for the digging of a canal (Cavo Curiano) to drain the stagnant waters of the river Velino to flow over the Marmore cliff and join the river Nera, 165 metres below.

Important: in December and January the area used for excursions is closed. The public can only gain access to Piazzale Byron,
Belvedere Pennarossa and Belvedere Superiore.
On
Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New year the floodgates are opened between 1 and 4pm.

Entance ticket to the area entitles visitors to the following:
- assistance and guide for excursions of between 25 and 50 people to be requested on entering the area if there are guides available or 24 hours before the visit. Guided tours start every hour on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. On other days guided tours vary according to opening times;
- parking and other services offered in the area;
- access to the footpaths;
- information from the permanent tourist information office;
- access to the Belvedere Superiore and the Belvedere Inferiore after tickets have been stamped at the entrance;
- free use on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays of the shuttle buses running between the Belvedere Superiore and the Belvedere
Inferiore.
