Discovering Ancient Treasures with Archeoclub

On March 24 2003 the Foligno Archeoclub is organising a visit to the Colfiorito plains, also known as the Piani Plestini, that lie between the provinces of Perugia and Macerata at between 750 and 800 meters above sea level.
As well as being rich in archeology and history, this interesting landscape is unique in Umbria and the region's smallest regional park.
The remains unearthed here date back as far as the Prehistoric Age and indicate that this mountain pass was known and used by countless civilisations through the ages. History tells us that this was where the Iron Route once passed, as well as being the place where the Romans founded the ancient city of Plestia, a vital crossroads for trade between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian seas. The nearby Colfiorito marshes contribute to the considerable humidity of the area, listed in 1976 as one of the internationally protected marshlands at the Ramsar Convention. In 1995 the whole area was qualified as a protected natural reserve by the region of Umbria.
In one day it will be difficult to see everything, so Archeoclub intends to concentrate its attention on those places of greatest cultural interest.

Activities
Founded in 1974 by M. Pia Martini and Massimo Recchi, the Foligno Archeoclub is part of the nationally recognised Archeoclub Italia and aims to protect the area's artistic heritage.
Within a very short time and after several important initiatives carried out in Foligno itself, the city's Archeoclub was encharged with a consultancy role in preserving the area's cultural heritage.

In 1986 it organised the photography exhibition focussing on the fortification systems of the Trinci family, with a publication featuring the studies carried out on the subject. In 1987 Mrs Martini was elected president of the sodalizio. In 1990 she was elected national counsellor for Archeoclub Italia. The same year, research on the Via Flaminia Under Augustus produced a photographic exhibition that is still running across Italy, as well as a cassette.
M. Pia Martini died in 1991 but her memory and teachings continue, allowing the association to develop and continue pursuing its goals.

The association organises events and cultural initiatives all the year round. Its activities range from guided tours to conferences, evaluation of the artistic heritage, and preservation of single monuments by adopting them for restoration, such as the Sant' Apollinare church after it was damaged in the 1997 earthquake.
