Palio della Mannaia in Pietralunga
Pietralunga (Pg). The Palio della Mannaia Medieval pageant of Pietralunga will run this year from August 4th to 10th. The event derives from a miraculous occurrence that took place in this town in September 1334: during his pilgrimate to the Volto Santo of Lucca, Giovanni di Lorenzo di Picardia stopped in Pietralunga and was unfairly accused of murder. When the axeman swung his weapon to put him to death the axe mysteriously turned with the blade upwards.
